Lier Market, in my opinion is no different from any other market, but it has over the years built up a reputation for being able to get good pigeons for a good price. I know many fanciers who have had some good deals and others who have foolishly bought good looking healthy birds and introduced them to their stock straight away and have paid the price. Again this is just my opinion, birds on the continent may perform better for continental fanciers, because their husbandry is way different from ours, but it works well for them. British fanciers, our husbandry is a lot different, the reason for this I think, is racing pigeons over here is not as lucrative as it is over there, so therefore we don't spend anything close to them in the way of medications. Some, but not all use a lot of antibiotic type treatments and as soon as their birds look a little off form, they get another dose. The immune systems of these birds is nowhere near the immune systems of our birds. I can't speak for anyone else, but from my personal experience, I believe if you can get your birds in tip top condition using natural products without the use of antibiotics, then this ultimately builds up their immune system and the use of antibiotics should only be used when it is quite clear that your birds immune system cannot fight off naturally, the many infections they succumb to. I have some good friends, who regularly purchase birds from the continent and they quarantine these birds for no less than three weeks, in this time they wean them off the likes of Baytril and such treatments. Many antibiotics on the market can make an ill pigeon look good, so all that I can say is buyer beware. I'm not in any way saying don't buy birds from abroad, but if you do make sure you are buying from someone reputable, someone you can visit and build up a friendly relationship with. We had some birds brought to us from a Dutch fancier at Blackpool, even though they looked healthy enough, we still locked them up and monitored them carefully, luckily they were ok and we didn't have any problems. At the end of the day, common sense must prevail and you must protect your existing stock at all costs. Every bird we sell in Blackpool, we give a Biosecurity advice notice with, this is for their own protection. Rant over.

interesting post gary, enjoyed reading your opinions there........i agree, i also think any new pigeon brought into your lofts should be quaranteened from your own just as a matter of precation, weather it be bought from lier or from the bloke down the road........

yes very important to quarentine any new birds and even then you can still get stung this is why i now give a 7 day course of antibiotics to any new bird as i quarentined for 2 weeks and still had bother back last year so as a safe guard its a 7 day treatment but i am in no way a constant user of antibiotics and to be honest this is the only time i have used them
