PostSubject: Re: If you could only    If you could only EmptyThu Dec 01, 2016 10:42 am

Before I packed in due to work shifts, family etc, I tried to hang on to pigeons by keeping 6 racing cocks (inland up to 260 mls only) and 6 hens which didn't race. That was it 12 pigeons total.
They weren't trained or raced as YB's, settled to new home as yearlings then trained maybe up to 35 miles approx. but usually single up, and not raced till 2 year olds.
Had 3 x 1sts club plus 2nd, 4th and 7th fed and several other decent positions in good competition. Finished season with 4 out of the 6.
So answer to your question this is what I'd do as I've seen it work for me anyway.

Hi Phil

This is another Phil here - blueskylofts.

I was extremely busy building our new loft when you joined (you might have seen my latest postings) and never got the chance to welcome you.

However - from one Phil to another - WELCOME. It is great to see that you are contributing already. That is just what we need on this forum - members that 'put in' as well as take out.

Cheers Buddy.

12 pair? Mate 3 pair then a week later another 3 and so on until all mated. Gives you a lot of flexibility come race season. ie. 10 day eggs, hatching young etc etc,. Just a suggestion.

in an ideal world yes I would mark, but I personally couldn't do it.....I`m too soft with them and treat them as pets....I suppose I should have never let them get to this many, and controlled the numbers more when I could. Embarassed

yes me too mark, got 11,1,2 and 13 year olds and its hard when ive had them for so long, they would be no good to anyone else.......although all what I have are still filling eggs and hatching them...i1ll have a 12 year old hen who was still hatching ybs last season, and I`m hoping she will do in 2017 too.

so long as you enjoy yer pigeons that's all that matters lads ,i hate it when guys flippantly talk of culling birds ,yes we all have to but it is not nice and don't need to be said at all .theirs no discussion in it for me ...i got 3...8 year old cocks here all have cards but their finished now so will use them as feeders and switch eggs under them these birds did me proud and gave me a lot of enjoyment so they can have a box Smile
