Good young bird will make good old bird?

Some young birds beat their loft mates most of the time. They usually turn out to be good yearlings and old birds. However, some young show nothing then get better and better. But is rare. The odds are against them. So like gambling, must play the odds. Me anyway.

Different if you have a sprint family and a distance family going to the same races....fast maturing should beat the slower type most times...

ive heard of pigeons that top the fed as a young bird, but never do anything as a yearling / old bird.....some birds may take the odd card, and also never take another, it might just be down to circumstances on the day, as to why they do well.  

Depends on the family of birds I think I have two sections one for distance and one for Sprint the distance birds are slow to mature and seldom take prizes as young birds but start to show as yearlings but my Sprint birds show as young birds and it makes it easier to select them on performance for next year

what are your sprint birds mark...?

I have had many a yb not showing much as a yb but went on to win as yearlings and beyond and the same way round, had yb's win but rubbish as yearlings. I have even waited in some cases 2 years but still no good..now if they win they win but if they go off the boil they have to go to make room

if a pigeon doesn't race well from being a yb, how long do members give them...yearlings, 2 year olds...?

One year as yearlings but 2 if showing promise

distance 400+ 3yo but....iv a red.c. 6 this year been to 572mile 4 times and came back just out of race time hes going back this year try a different approach with him,going to jump him from 170mile into 572mile.
they used to do it years ago 60s 70s in my own club and get them.

Folksin my club (and most of the Fed) will not fly YB's more than 225 miles. Old birds 300 some. For me being on the long end, 320 is the longest for YB's and 400 the longest for OBs. I do not have Sprinters or extreme distance birds. I have a family that can win a fast one or a slow one. Or at least be competitive. Have won a YB race from 350 miles from the West. East course is the usual direction. 2nd day bird. Bad weather, birds crossed lake into the US and came up from Detroit. Special race. Not a regular. Velocity I beleive was 800 mpm or so. Won the 600 miler with an old bird. Velocity 1050 mpm or so. Won a 200 miler 15 mins ahead of any one else from 250 miles young birds. Basically all the same family. With the same family have lost many races also. I lose more. many more, than what I win. If one wanted to win fast ones or just long ones then the birds would be specialists at that distance. It is what makes it interesting. So many ways to go. So many diversions.
Alice Springs to Adelaide, Australia, just over 800 miles. One time they clocked a day bird.

Last little bit took my interest  Hal I have what I call here the Moukas pigeons from South Australia. Slow, slow types     in the sprint type races etc. But A/S to A type distance races you could bet your house on them to race well as such. Waffle again Con Moukas "A/S to Adelaide specialist" had a hen "night flyer" 2nd fed 400 miles & 2nd fed 500 miles both times clocked in the dark as such which won the bird of the year in his fed at the time there along with winning their Alice springs to Adelaide race on more than one occasion etc. Knackeroo by chance, has a loft full of pigeons bred from 3 sons off his double fed hen here. Sprint type racing are for the sprinter types distance men think a differant way I would suggest. cheers
