Personally I believe your birds, and you have done well. Far better than many ……...
Your 'Of course we were too late to put them on the darkness and nearly too late to get them anything like ready for the young bird racing season.
In the end, we did quite well, ending up with 21 young birds all of which had had several races and most had flown out to 100 miles plus.
Our last two races were the most memorable. We had had some seconds and thirds in the club before that, but the penultimate race we did we won the club, and the very final race, not only did we win the club, but we topped the Fed with the same bird as the week before'.
The parents of this particular bird that was first in the club and topped the fed has some really good quality Mark Gilbert blood on both sides (well, not actually his blood but the blood of his racing family!!)'
This is what I used to do regards putting birds together... after I stopped leaving them together and not splitting the old birds. Only reason then was to make it easier to mate different birds … But still last week March 1st/ 2nd even week April. Every one to their own of course...…..
May I ask a personally question? Were you surprised with the results, especially having a late breeding I take it rightly or wrongly, that you normally would have mated earlier.
