Reminds me a bit of the present day Utility workers.

They are alive but half the time asleep.

Gas works in nearly every road, light out of sequence and half a dozen WORKERS leaning on barriers.

I only ever did two years manual work in my life, down the pit.

Your reached the bottom WORKED for four hours had a twenty minute break and WORKED until your shift ended.

Today it is in reverse and we have to pay.

same, same here Misty Must admit thou  the flag men & women types of today are more rather multi skilled these days compared to old type times. Seen them talking on their mobiles while directing traffic & actually have even seen them putting make up on to just look the part of being busy here while working .
