nest boxes

hi all as im no good with wood work any one know where i can get some cheap standed widoow boxes from ...

hi phil, ians a joiner maybe he could build some for you for a reasonable price...........dont know how far you live away from him though

make them your self phil
can get all your boards cut to size in b & q
just screw them together

went to b and q the other day to price some ply, £10 for a small piece.....couldnt beleive it, looks like ill be re-thinking making my own sputnic type traps now......

i went in to bq to david even went to wood placce near me and it was 28 pound a sheet even 6m ply board would work out for 4 box would need 3 sheets wich is 40 pound ....

use chipboard phil mate.

yes i did too phil, think it was prox 14 ml and should work out cheaper than ply maybe.

the price of wood is realy high at the moment i work part time for build base
so i get mine cheap im doing the front of my loft at the moment with wood i got for free
all old stock decking fencing posts im like kid in a sweet shop saved loads of money .

lucky sod........... hope you can post a pic when the lofts done kev. ive been working out what materials im going to need for my avaiery and some flagging im doing before the winter comes.........

yes very lucky , if you lived closer i had loads of 2x2 gave them away to a work mate

yes a shame kev, i went to price ply and it was unbeleivable for a small piece........was going to make some traps because i thought it would work out cheaper but by the time ive made them i dont think it will.

cheapest way is chipboard
maybe not the best
but will get few seasons out of them
that what i have used for last few lots i have made for lads
last ones i made for myself where out of old table tennis tabble tops
these have lasted very well

agree with kev david,wood is quite dear at the moment,would suggest shoping around a bit as you could find it a bit cheaper.

its for outside steve, but woder if it would be ok if i painted/stained it....? ive already got a load of chipboard.

not a trap

ah right, thought you means trap steve.....used 18ml chip for my w/hood boxes and couldnt even lift them good sturdy boxes but i bought my next set which were a lot lighter and flatpack...........

most make them from 12 mm chip board
but the thicker the better

good and solid steve, but very hard to saw and heavy to lift and fit on your own......it was wood i had left over when i built a conservatory and fitted a chipboard floor which needed to be 18 ml and treated.......saved me some money though.

12mm chipboard is too thin 18 mm is what you should use plenty thickness to screw too

this 18ml chip i used altho very heavy once built has stayed straight and solid, just as they were when i made them....the thinner boxes i bought have warped already and only had them a season, this 18ml is treated and when water is spilled on them it doesnt soak in and warp it........

ian, your a joiner arnt you, have you any ideas for making sputnic type traps out of ply...?

will take a pic of one for you david so you can see how they are made

one that you have made ian, or a bought one...? im thinking of making the sides and floor from ply with some dowelling and polly carbon front...??? also with some bob wires...???
