That to me. Well my opinion, that is.
Is quite a contradiction in terms.
Gift birds can sometimes be a good introduction, to some lofts.
But not all.
The best gift birds, in my opinion are strays. After all, there must have been some reason the owner raced it in the first place.
What commands the price of a pigeon.
Is it the fancier who has successfully bred and raced his own family of pigeons, winning prestigious prizes and awards.
Is it the bloodlines of his winning pigeons, which he nurtured for decades with much success.
Regardless of price, when purchasing his original original stock.
Maybe the success of his pigeons, is not really down to the birds at all.
Maybe it could be down to his own skill of selecting pairs and his carefully planned management system.
Maybe it was just good luck.
If somebody was offering to sell me pigeons for a tenner, good pigeons at that.
I would think that the fancier, was maybe a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
Lets try and work out, how much it costs to produce a pigeon.
The housing of your stock for one year, feeding, vitamins minerals, even tonics. Canker treatment, cocci treatments, worming, vaccinating, red mite treatments.
Special diets or different times of the year. Purchasing of rings.
Not taking into account, the fanciers own time. pairing up, tending to his flock throughout the breeding season, paperwork. transfers.
Just a little food for thought.
