hi phil, i think they were right....wood shavings down on the floor would be far too dusy and blow around all over the place. there are different types and makes of floor bedding but ive heard that kat litter is just as good, never tried it myself tho......for the last couple of seasons i just put straw on the floor and for them to build nests with and it been ok for me, altho some would disagree.

if your loft gets wet then it absorbs it so its not so damp for the birds , if you type in google horse bedding theres lots of places that sell it i get mine local so i can imagine theres somewhere local for you

Hi David easybed is for horses but works great when put down for pigeons. If it dos get wet in patches eg round water drinkers simply take the clod of easybed out. I would advise raising the water drinkers up on bricks with a square of mdf or ply to put the drinker on so the birds have to hop up to drink. Then all you have to do is rake through eaither everyday or every other day. We had the same thread on PL and a few guys on there use Hempcore again for horses he said ..................................i use hempcore in stock loft take clumps out once a week a bail is about 7 quid 2 bails gives me about 4 inch cover in 13 foot by 8 foot floor i leave it in about 8 months dont rake it no dust fantastic absorbancy nice smell birds love it no dust water it slightly when you first put it down .instructions on side of bail it for horses. Hope that helps .......Amanda

Both easy bed and hemp core are for use with horses David. But both can be used for pigeons. Both cost any where between £5 - £7 per bale. If you have a local countrywide store or riding stables they should be able to help you out.

ill be off to crowthers who ive noticed sell horse products, i wonder if they will have it......so what do i ask for ? Hi David i dont use eaither product. I scrape out the floors and boxes everyday. But if i was to choose a deep litteri think i would go for the Hempcore, i found this Hemp Hemp has been cultivated in North America since the 17th century. Having survived a scandalous history, it is once again legal to grow hemp commercially in Canada . The outside of the hemp stalks are harvested for use in the textile, composite and paper industries. The core of the stalk is used for animal bedding, garden mulch and building materials. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, has even appointed the European company Hempcore, producers of hemp bedding, as her equine product supplier. HempChips, an Ontario based company, researched the wide spread use of hemp bedding in Europe and did stall trials and test marketing of the product in Ontario prior to launching HempChips at the Royal Winter Fair in 1998. Health Benefits HempChips are dust extracted and cleaned of any impurities to ensure a clean stable environment and to reduce conditions that lead to respiratory problems in horses. The product is all natural – there few chemicals used to grow the hemp stalk and no chemicals used during processing. They are also unpalatable to horses. Economic Benefits HempChips are double the absorbency of wood shavings, so much less bedding is needed each month. The particle size easily falls through pitch fork tines, ensuring very little extra bedding is removed during removal of manure. Due to the fact that very little bedding is added to the manure pile, the bedding that is removed decomposes quickly into high quality mulch. The initial outlay to set up a stall on HempChips would be up to $35 with monthly material maintenance cost of approximately $40. Drawbacks “We have demand for the HempChips coming throughout North America a for a wide range of animals due to the many product features,” said Geofrey G. Kime, president of Hempline Inc. As a result of the widespread popularity of HempChips, the current supply is limited. However, we are expanding our processing capacity so we can meet the demand.” I think the respiratory factor is one of the most inportant, when you compare the dust that gets in straw. If you do want to use straw i would shake it loose outside to let most of the dust blow away. Then put it in the loft. |
