| David is probably correct Phil and no need to panic.............
but pigeons do get feather rot (depluming mite), we had it in 1993 when we first brought the Van Reets in and again in 2004 when we bought a couple of old Hartogs
We treated with a very very watered down bleach, on a saucer and dab into the infected area to kill the mite, feathers grown back when moulting |

| FEATHER ROT : Two causes - Fungus/feather boring mite. Both cases thrive in damp patches i.e. residual damp from faeces on perches / nests/ floor corners.. The fungus, microbe or mite lives within the soft pulp of feather shaft, gradually breaking to stubble until bald patches appear.
Affected pigeons may be bathed in Camphor water, alternatively use a proprietory feather rot specific.
Pigeons will moult clean but the problem may reoccur at the next humid season. Fanciers of old applied crushed mothballs & soap to infected area or painted with paraffin oil
Note, if using the watered bleach solution, be careful as to much and it could be absorbed through the skin!!!!! |

| Remember Billy O'Neil used a powder solution for feather rot similar to lice powder or it may have been lice powder |

| my croppers get bald patches on the crop and the skin looks a bit dry.i have a tube of cream thats for athletes foot and it works good.it may be a fungus infection on the skin.rub it into the bald patch and then wash it off a few hours later. |

| I was reading through some of the old posts and this one was of interest to me and I have the solution to the problem. when a bird begins to lose its feathers firstly in the crop area and then it get worse and eventually the skin will turn black and it will have a completely bald chest if left for years untreated. It looks like some kind of feather rot but in fact it is a tiny mite that lives in the skin of the bird, it is called the de pluming mite and is similar to scabies in a human. You can buy a product called Borst ork from belga vet which is a cream that you apply to the bald crop area of any bird showing signs of feather loss in that area and massage the cream into the birds skin and up its neck and under the beak. Do this 2 or 3 times and the mite will be killed and the feathers will grow back. Another way is buy some flowers of Sulphur, this is a powder from around volcanoes mix this powder 50/50 with a water based moisturising creme and apply this in the same way. It works just the same and solves the problem every time. I came across this in Portugal and using this method we cleaned up the infection of these mites in a few lofts that had the problem. If you just ignore it it will spread among many birds and infest other fanciers birds if you race the carriers. If you race or train a bird with a bald chest and the wind is very cold and in the face the birds urine could freeze causing the bird discomfort or worse due to the bald chest area having no insulation from the cold. |
