Had a visit from a fellow fancier today. He also breeds Betta Splendens. Siamese Fighting fish. He pointed out (he knows everything) flaws in the system I use for the birds. Nest. He flies widowhood cocks. 40 of them. I told him to check the results. Compare them in the Fed. Sort of went quiet. Changed the topic to Bettas. I have Delta tails, crown tails, half moon and full moon tails on them. He expounded on the usual thinking all must be kept separate or they would kill each other etc, etc,. Told him bullshit! Long story, short version. Took him into the house. Showed him a 5 gallon and a 10 gallon with baby bettas in them. Then showed him a 40 gallon. Heavily planted. 10 male Bettas in there plus numerous Guppies. 10 female Bettas also. Community tank. He could not believe it! Told him, they are not separated in tanks in their natural habitat, so as long as they have room they will establish a pecking order. Sure, few chewed fins but saves on 10 bowls. He seemed rather pissed off when he left.....

Nice one Hal, you think outside the box, or tank in this case.

| When I lived in Berlin, I kept tropical fish, and I was always told that you can only have one Siamese Fighting fish in a tank, so that's what I did. I bought just one. I wish I had known then what you are telling us about. I would possibly have had a couple more, as I had quite a big tank and there would have been room for three of them.
Sorry Hal, I am not into the technicalities about their colours and so, but I just love them.
Also getting back to your visitor - I think we all know people like him, in fact we have a guy next door to us here in frogland who knows Everything about EVERYTHING! NOT! But at least he is a kilometre away.

The colour combinations on the bettas are outstanding, the discus I used to breed had some superb colours but these bettas are a class above, thanks for the link hal

Discus were too hard for me. Too many water changes. Years ago kept bettas in an outdoor pond here in Canada. Paradise fish also. Sudden cold snap was the end of that venture.

Water very soft here in South Wales Hal, only lots of water changes when rearing babies, adults only twice a week, but my arthritis put paid to my discus keeping, but the good news is, I found pigeon racing again
