| oh you can tell george if a egg is lodged ,no movement around the vent area ,feeling compacted ....heat helps so maybe put a basket with a drinker on near a radiator or dip the hen in warm water and hold her there for 5 minutes ,be gentle with her though as you dont want any accidents eh if she is eggbound so dont go squeezing the vent area ,good luck george |

| Would never entertain a pigeon with canker, once you have it you must treat for it all the time, we inherited it from the continentals who use a monthly medication, Friend with well known stud said if he did not treat every month he would not have a pigeon left. .
There was the odd case when I was young but not on the present scale.
Once bought a pair of stock birds, always kept new ones seperate, showed no signs of anything untoward, before the young were able to be seperated they showed signs of canker, culled them and the parents.
BAYTRIL I think was the medication.
Did an article on importing continental problems back in the 1970s.
Funny how peole who have problems advise how to cure and take no notice of those who have no problems.
I am convinced using lime deep litter and garlic all the time with no medication was the reason I had no health problems with the pigeons after a time culling any that showed the least ill health.
Like breeds like and our present pigeons over all are sickly.
FUNNY OLD GAME.
Regards.

My method George would be dispose of it. Could cause problems, depending what it is. If other birds are fit why risk infecting them. If it is a single problem then the pigeon is a problem, why have one ?. My methed was prevention not a load of dubious cures. Regards. |

Know the feeling George. That is one part of our sport I disliked, having to reduce numbers. If you could be sure which couple of pairs bred winner consistantly you would not have to cull, which was the soul destroying part of our sport. Same with other animals, have had several broken heart examples with dogs and cats when they pass on, like losing a member of the family. days Unfortunely, you cannot keep all you breed in the pigeon game, everyone has to breed many to get a real team together at one time or another and sadly you have to cull and the more selective you are the better the result. Have to be honest, many times had pigeons for a meal in my younger and ignorant days. As you get older you appreiate all life more. Regards. . |

Different world you lived in David. When I was young, and that is the time I was taking about, I caught wild rabbits with ferret and nets, nearly always had rabbit stew on the go, day old chicks from the rag and bone man, fed them up for Christmas, had my pigeons, tame rabbits, chickens for eggs etc; etc; Loved all the animals I kept but waste was not on the premises. Kept animals and birds from being able to walk. Tough times but would go back to them with open arms. Regards. |

Was a far different time George, needs must, waste not. I never ate one after things picked up, many fanciers did the same, dove coats etc[ etc] I would not eat one now, was a war on, and aftermath cannot compare then and now. My granny got an allowance of bran to breed Belgium hares for food, She was the village MID WIFE and was involved in all village matters. My grandad had a shoe shop, two allotments and grew vegetables year round. Most young men were in the forces, totally different situation than now. Rationing was the order of the day and to ignore a possible means of a meal ?????. Miners were exempt from serving in the forces and still had their pigeons, bet not one, although loving every one of their pigeons, would cull and as many do today put them in the bin. Times of waste not. Regards. |

| looks like a tumour maybe? Can happen when hens are used as egg machines and don't rear any babies themselves but I know this wasn't in your case george. |

Would suggest George that she must be suffering irrespective of any other consideration, know what I would do as a kindness. Regards. |
