breeding Second time round barnie I did the same, no stock birds, set off with kit of well bred young birds, raced them all and bred from all, raced their youngsters and eventually found those that bred the goods and they became flying out stock birds. Never looked back, never introduced any for several years and then only youngsters, six, to have a bit of new blood but culled them after a couple of years of crossing. You never know just what the fanciers selling their cast offs do health wise, and many ailments cannot be detected by sight nor handling. Even youngsters can carry the ill health of parents and also pass them on. Would never have prisoner stock birds if I could start again. Regards. |

| if i was starting again i would have prisoners as they would have been successful racing buying in ybs racing them then breeding of them would take too long and may not turn out the distance bird you wanted be it sprint or what ever |

Oh happy days. What colour, will it be a champ, what pleasure a little egg can produce. Hope you take some photos as we go along. Also look forward to racing, win, draw or lose, hopefully the former. If dedication counts you are home and dried, but in this game ?????. All the best. Regrds. |

Would never throw away any eggs from stock birds. The very best only produce one or two real champions and the eggs you throw away may be the ones. Regards. |

| some fanciers pre pair them george before they actually pair up, then when the big day comes to put them together they are already paired and good to go ......could give a more even lay, all around the same time.
i know colin (barnie) does this .... |

| yes I put them together for an hour or so in the yb end with no distractions. You can tell straight away which pairs are happy. Any not so sure I leave in the yb end overnight and found when they wake up together next day they're keen enough. Always the odd exception but generally they follow the cocks to nestboxes when I decide to let them get on with it. |

| no not yet David, they'll have an hour or two with each other on a weekend, let them go in and out boxes without a bowl in. Just keep an eye on them as some yearlings are stupid and end up fighting. Also some cocks get rough on the hens. Once I get back from Blackpool I'll just open up the whole loft, put the bowls in and cross my fingers. Only interference is for first few nights I make sure pairs are locked in the nestbox overnight. Pairing this way means not messing on with water drinkers on nestbox fronts, or leaving them boxed up till hens come into egg. Only 10 pairs but wouldn't like to mess on like this with a big team. So about 4 weeks before pairing for breeding David. Or I might wait till Blackpool weekend, fill up the hoppers, open boxes, put bowls and straw in and disappear for the weekend, let them get on with it, sort themselves out |
