David if i was you i would only train himon good days and training him on his own would do him the world of good, it will show you what he is made of

Also as steve says just train him to 15 miles but and it's a big but don't train in east winds

thanks don, he was younger than the other ybs so didnt get chance to train with them, now hes making a nice bird and nearly finished the moult........if i can get him to 15 miles like you advise he could then join my widowhood team for next year making 9 yearling cocks......... Very Happy

if he,s playing catch up with the rest if it was me i would leave well alone
let him mature into a yearling for next season then start him of training
with the team training him on his own might ruin his confidence but each to there own
what ever you do david good luck .

at the end of the day you are in charge of your team you decide
if he,s a nice cock bird leve him alone , i have a 3 yr old hen never been raced
up to now due to being very unlucky with injuries but next season she is going to race
she could have gone this season but some thing was,nt right about her so she stayed at home
use your gut instinct if you start training him now it will just cause you more stress .

David I have always found these later birds do need some grounding, so If you can on the nicer days give him many short tosses 1,2,3,4, miles only all directions and offten. This way they realize they have to fly home and learn the area, but not too far to make mistakes end the season with a bit of confidence and he will be ok. I find without this they are a little nieve when you start training next year and are easily lost.

thanks for that martyn, i think it will benefit him more if he has at least a few short trainers like you suggest............and if i can get him racing next season he will give me 9 yearling widowhood cocks to race.
