| i know ian, it was something ken said to me the other day about why dont i race obs next year as well as ybs......he made me realise they will be yearlings and two year olds next year and none of them have even been on a training toss, so whats the piont of me keeping them apart from breeding from them.......if i keep all 22 birds i have i should be able in theory to breed about 35-40 ybs to race next season, but if like im thinking i get rid of some i wont be able to breed as mant ybs so i dont know, im going to end up with too many whichare doing nothing apart from eating corn. . |

| David before you start to race the old birds you will have bred all ur 2010 y/bs, as i said lif you train ur birds over the winter months on the better days they will be ready for the start of the season, all this rubbish you dont think the birds are good enough, you know i have scored with them, think you said some one else as aswell, so that is telling you something, be fair to the birds be honest with them give them a chance to race for you Ken P.S. sorry if that sounds abrupt David its not meant tro be |

| david,if youre not satisfied with the birds you have now is the time to do something about it,dont wait till its too late.if you dont have confidence in the birds you race youre not going anywhere. good luck. |

I agree iany, no room for softness!!! When I was a young kid , perhaps 14 years, I was befreinded by an old man Joe Catherall was his name. He was a crusty old character and never used two words where one would do. I remeber asking him for a spare hen that he might have, he replied: What do you want an hen for? ( i considered this to be a daft question at the time) I replied because I have a spare cock. Joe looked at me and shook his head, "do you want to be a pigeon racer or a Pigeon keeper he asked, I said A Pigeon Racer Joe, he then said well go and kill that spare cock then. I was shocked by Joes' reply and asked him why I should kill this spare bird. He asked me if I had paired up, I replied yes, last week, Joe said to me well if you have paired up why did you not pair this bird up instead of another, I tell you why he said, because you dont think it is as good as the others that you paired. I knew Joe was right and he showed me how to kill it!!! I was a little soft and did'nt want to look but Joe turned to me and said, Sorry Lad, but you killed it not me, asking Joe why, he said that I had deselected it thinking it was not fit to pair to one of my own hens and leave a different cock spare. At the time I could see no logic in his teachings, until he said to me " Look young un,if the wanst t' race pigeons and be sucessful then thas got t' be ard on em, I asked Joe what he meant by hard on em, he said to me " I'll tell you this only once lad, every time you go into your loft, look for one to kill. I left Joe bewildered at what he had said, Joe died some time later but left a note for me with his son; It read: I know you did,ny understand what I had said about killing birds when you go into your loft, but the day you can go into your loft and not find a bird that you could kill, that is the day you have got a loft of birds that will do you proud in future. Joes was right, always look for one to kill (because it has done nothing and bred nothing) I always think of Joe up in heaven, having his own loft and really being ard on them white doves we keep seeing! | great story malcolm, and good advise too........ive read of another top fancier saying the same thing (cant remember who). i could never see myself being as harsh as that but i think to be a successfull pigeon racer you have to cull the birds which never score at racing and never breed anything to score. once read the secret of success is pigeon pie......some truth in it i think. |

Hi David, Some pigeons look good on perches, some however, look better between two onions! The secret of sucess David is: Be hard but fair, a second chance is always worth ago, but three times NEVER. I was once told that it not birds who make mistakes, it the fancier! |
