| If you understant genetics you will know that there is no reason for a hen to have brown flecks/splashes and a cock to have black, that simply doesnt make sence, the 2 are not linked in any way colour is a genetic mutation which is not gender specific? |

| Hi Don, As I said before the splashes in a red come from grizzle, if a dark drizzle were paired to a red, that could possibly throw a red slashed, as you can get a red grizzle you can also get a red with grizzle which is the splashes? Wouldnt be surprised if those with red splashed birds either bred grizzles from them, or bred a red splash from a grizzle? |

ive never know a grizzle be bred from anything else but a grizzle...........thought at least one of the parents must be one. |

| Technically a red with splashes is a grizzle, I have never owned a red with splashes so would be interested to know if anyone has bred a grizzle from a red splash or a red splash from a grizzle? however It is possible to breed a grizzle from 2 birds that are not grizzle because I know os one. |

| interesting subject there martyn, never really thought about it...............would be interested to hear from members if they have ever bred a grizzle from non grizzle parents ?
maybe a grizzle could be found in the grandparents of the one you talk about martyn ....?
also when we are talking about a red spashed tecnically being a grizzle, are we talking about a red cheq...? |

| Yes david red chequers with black splashes, I have a few grizzles myself I have a grizzle hen who will either breed 2 grizzles in the nest or none, I have never bred from her non grizzle youngsters to see if they breed them? I have a grizzle cock paired to a chequer whos mother was a red, so never know might get a red splash? Also can you get a red from non red parents, not done much with reds I only have 1 and thats it, I really dont like them much. |

| i would think as long as there is a red/grizzle in the ancestry of a pair they could always possibly breed one on the odd occasion........
ive personally never really liked reds/mealies and hadnt really ever seen one with top wins, altho i know there will be some which are good as the fancier who i got my janssens off has an old red cock who has 10 firsts. |
