morning butch, personally I don't see the need to train ybs too early, but then again its best not leave it too late........ lol! 

I normally only take them a mile or two down the road, mainly just to teach them about coming out of the basket ........after maybe 4 of these I will take them approx. 5 miles another 4 or 5 times, once they are coming ok and getting home before me I take them 12 miles to pontifract race course for maybe 4 or 5 times, then they are ready to go with the club trainer....... Very Happy

I'd say about 6 weeks before the first race because you can pick the days and avoid the bad weather which always happens. Then your birds have a decent bit training into them before the skies are full of trainers clashing 2 weeks before the first race.
I used to go about 2 or 3 miles for starters but got them to 40 miles at least 6 times before the first YB race.

hi you have plenty of time before training your young birds up i take it that they going away raking for a hour or two? you will be racing a simalar programe to us in newcastle our young are just starting to bunch together wont train them till about 5/6 weeks have to check how many old bird races we have left. if you train before they get an idea where the live you will drop a few . cheers terryp..
