I've got a quick question for cold weather pigeon folks. I went to feed and water this morning. I pulled the bath pans from yesterday, and my birds started flapping enthusiastically to get into the pans. I've noticed that when they do this, they want a bath badly. Well, it is still -30 F and have been told to give them one as long as it is morning. I thought I should get some advice from the old world before I give it a go. I have noticed they stay and soak when the water is Luke warm/ with epsom salts. Any advice? It is 10:00 AM here now

Thanks. I decided to go pour them a bath before the response. They jumped right in though. Hopefully I didn't screw-up too badly. Tough birds! I'll go check in an hour.....hopefully I wont observe pigeonsicles

Wow. Didn't seem to bother them at all. The pans have a half inch of ice over them and the birds are carrying on, and having a good time. Pretty amazing. The Icelandic chickens don't act so nonchalant. Gives me a little confidence, as fifty below will be coming soon.

-30 F. Did I screw up bad? I just checked a few and they were dry underwing. What do you recommend I keep an eye on? The temp warmed up to -12.

Honestly, I would not bother with winter baths. Mine bathe in the snow in the aviary sometimes.

That is what surprised me. At minus 30 water freezes in minutes. I put a barrel in he back f the pick up yesterday. 3/4 full of water. Froze most of it overnight. Adds weight. Had to go to the Indian Reservation today. Gas is cheaper there, no tax. Same as cigarettes. Bought 3 cartons. 200 in a carton. $30. May be 15 pounds UK? They have their own factory.

Next time it gets to -33.444 degrees CELSIUS, I will post a picture of tossing up a cup of boiling water. At thoose tempatures the boiling water turn to snow instantly. I'll admit that is a bit childish, but I enjoy it.

That is occam's razor! I found a conversion chart on the internet. I took a good look at my pigeons tonight. So far nothing has shown up that I can tell. What are the coldest temperatures that you have to deal with? I use to rehab birds about 15 years ago in the American southeast. The humidity was always a stress factor down there. When the weather gets as cold as it does here, the humidity is very low. Noose bleed low actually. We received 8 more inches of snow today, but it sure was a "white christmas". |
