| Would love to see some of them, bring back memories no doubt.
As I remember the 30s there was more concoctions doing the rounds than sand on the beach.
Regards

| By gum barnie, what a read, think times have changed somewhat.
Any outsider reading that lot would think twice about keeping our feathered friends.
The bit I liked was, the more freedom a pigeon has the less health problems.
Tis confinement that causes most problems, what I have always thought.
The cures proposed makes one shudder.
In the 30s in my area the only problems most fanciers met with was, one eyed cold, coxi and canker.
Coxi treated with sulphermenthodine, canker with end of a match and other such and cannot remember what was used for one eyed cold.
But as for feed and concoctions too numerous and humerous to list.
Thanks barnie enjoyed that but hard going.
Regards. |

| The fanciers in the village where I lived as a child, miners mainly, lived for their pigeons.
Not much else about, many would never leave the village in their lifetime.
Can assure you the fanciers tried numerous different concoctions to increase their chances of success.
Not many actual commercial products about as today but one or two.
Johnsons Iron tonic was available and believe OLd Hand was about.
But it was the concoctions fanciers made up themselves that was interesting.
Many made from different vegitables and berries etc.Cod liver oil played a part.as did mallasses.
These are just a few that I can remember but many more were tried.
One thing is for sure, the pigeons were not medical dependant as most pigeons are today and none would fly ROME as some did then.
Commercialism has ruined the sport.
Regsrds.
