| who on this forum breeds show racers?the reason im asking is because i have been reading the doug mclary book and he flies his show racers out.im pretty sure the show racers i have are fat, heavy and just a bit spongy when you hold them.you can defenetely feel thats the breast is fat not muscle.im going to fly my youngsters with my horseman.got 2 pair on eggs but one of the eggs got squashed probably because they are too heavy.just wondering if anyone flies theirs out. |

| Show birds are for showing and they are not for flying if you look at all the top show men they never have there birds out but they bath them in aviaryies
When stewarding at the old commarades show if one got out if you made them fly after a few laps round they wouls laid on the floor and you can grab them then because they are not for flying compared to a race bird |

| i've kept show racers from last year, so still a novice really, but doug's books are an excellant read having read them myself, if ever you want to ask doug anything pop him an email, i have and he was good enough to reply to me on a couple of occasions. douglasmcclary@bigpond.comyes he does fly his show birds but for me i tried it and to be honest i think the flying abilaty has been bred out of them in a way. i did try last year to fly out but to be honest they just wanted to sit on either the house or the shed roof, with this experiance i my self would not bother letting them out with the racers as the chances of spoiling the race team would in my opinion be high. having spoke to other members of the show racer sociaty on this subject most are in agreement with myself and a good sized aviary is all they need. hope this helps, but it is just my opinion, what works for one don't always work for another happy showing |

| hi chris was this youngsters you tried out?the thing is if everyone else keep their birds in then all the birds are judged on being fat not robust as they should be.maybe try a pair of squeekers with my horseman youngsters. |

| these was a mix of young birds and old birds, i do agree if you handle my racers and the show birds there is a big diferance in between the two, feeding the show birds i dont do anything differant to the racers when it comes down to the amount . i do feed a difarent mix for the show birds, i use country wide concorde mix, ]Maple Peas, Red Dari, Wheat, Tares, White Dari, Safflower, Soya Beans (Roasted).
nothing is waisted and the feather quality is second to non, as for them ending up fat pigeons not in my case. here's a picture of one of my best cocks i think is doing well on the feed i give them cheers chris |

but if your showing your birds what do the judges look for ie feather quality , stance , and as to be clean of course but what else do they look for ???? basicaly all what you said, quality of the bars is another , not too much of a dip above the wattle nice and round from the head down to the end of the beak , balanced in the hand, feather damage , mites etc. i'm no judge just some of the things thats been said, i never shown last year as it was my 1st year with them, this year will be the test for me. |
