hi lads just wondered what members thoughts were on solar activity this year as its at a peak this year in its cycle and with poor weather and big losses already with obs and the peak to come in the summer i just wonder if we will see one of the worst yb race seasons in years ...as we know these solar storms effect the earths magnetic field which is one of the tools a bird uses for navigation even more so on a cloudy day when they cant pick out land marks ....just wondered if any members have views on the subject

I read something about it upsetting the signal to certain sat navs.

yes thats rite gaz they are worried it could frazzle our power plants aswell but my point is it distorts earths magnetic field in turn effecting the birds navigation ...i remember we had a realy bad yb race last year and it was when their was a solar storm and it was a fine day but very stil with no wild birds in the air ....eerie if you like

I don't know much about it mate, but is defo weird shit. It could well be a contributing factor, they said the same thing about wind turbines with their massive inverters creating field distortion. I do believe that pigeons use a sort of magnetic sense to navigate.
