Blue Bar No56. removed to sick quarters 05.08.12

On the 05/08 I went in into my young bird and I discovered a young pigeon in very poor health. It had dirty coloured wattles and appeared to have a greasy substance around its wattles and beak

An Experiment With A sick YB 408207_502711966424612_218817122_n

05/08/2012
Pigeon appears lethargic, huddled up, greasy pinky grey wattles. Appetite: normal.
Water consumption normal.

06/08 Wattles looking wet, wetness on feathers around wattles and eye. Droppings soft but not loose. Appetite normal, not holding corn.
Bicarbonate of soda added to drinking water for one day.

07.08
Bird seems more alert today, no wetness on feathers. Wattles becoming grey in colour, feathers seem a lot dryer, appetite normal.
Naturaline and glucose in drinking water.

08/08
Bird seems much more alert today, wattles are much dryer and are now beginning to become whiter. The eye is much brighter.
Still naturaline and glucose in drinker.
Droppings still soft but not loose.
Added redstone grit to corn and Omega 3 fish oil and wheatgerm oil.

09.08.2012
Droppings more solid and have took on a red colour with the addition of redstone grit.
Still naturaline in water with glucose.
Wheatgerm oil with Yerba mate extract on corn.
Pigeon extremely alert today.

10.08.2010
The bird is looking much better today and beginning to get his plumage bloom back.
Plain water today and a slightly heavier corn mix..
Extremely alert today, eating and drinking normal, droppings have now firmed up

11.08.2012
The birds condition seems to be improving with the plumage shining, eye is bright and the birds seems to be very alert
Added Glucose and vitamins and Marmite to water today.

12.08.2012
The bird seems to have now made a full a recovery.
No medication given.
Will just keep it in quarantine for another few days and then return back to loft.

some times you have to give a bird a chance ive found the best way is to remove it far from the loft into a basket
there seems to be a desease gas going round now thts turns the eye yellow read it on another site
but i stand by what i say fit birds wont go down so fast yes they will at some point but not often
the way to check is your club and fed results also its the same names at national level ask ya self why is this

The point that i am making, is that it would have been so easy, to grab the antibiotics and start dosing up.
At least this way, they have fought the ailment themselves, all I have done is provide them the required
extras to boost up their natural immune system.
No cocci flare up, no signs of canker no respiratory.
The pigeon is not down in weight.
Hopefully now this will have a positive effect on its natural immune system.

It is Ray when you delve a little deeper, because there seems to be a current trend of the over use of antibiotics.
Which is nothing more than antibiotic abuse.
A quick fix.
We hear the term Superbug crop up from time to to time.
A strain of bacteria that has mutated because it has become resistant to antibiotics.
The pigeon in the picture in some lofts would have been disposed of, in other lofts it would have been fed antibiotics.
If the bird had a bacterial infection, then obviously, a properly prescribed antibiotic at the right dosage, for the right period of time could help rid the bird of the infection as a very last resort.
But what if it was fungal infection? Would antibiotics help?
What if it was a viral infection a virus? Would antibiotics help?
Unless you are a vet, do not prescribe your birds antibiotic treatment, because you do not know what you are doing.
You may actually be doing your birds more harm that good.
The bird in the picture had a viral infection, like a common cold to you and I.
There is a mention of a fit bird not getting ill, in many cases I would agree with this statement.
This was a very young pigeon, it's fitness was just beginning to get there, but the stress from training caused it to become run down.
Hence the cold.
Because the bird was was given complete rest and segregated for while and fed plenty of tonics containing plenty of vitamins.
It made a complete recovery.
