the only tonic i use now ian is johnsons tonic which ive been told is good as its been around for years, i cant tell any difference but it may be ok? the only problem i have with it is that when you put fresh tonic and water in the drinker, after a while it goes to the bottom of the drinker so im not sure they are getting anything from it.... Neutral

when we raced we used aviform.... Smile

Johnsons tonic is really just an iron tonic, and you are right it is a problem settling at the bottom of the drinker.
You may laugh at this one but keep a rusty nail in the drinker it will do the same as Johnsons.

Iron is part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of the blood. Iron deficient birds tire easily because their bodies are starved for oxygen. Iron is also part of myoglobin, which helps muscle cells store oxygen. Without enough iron, ATP (the fuel the body runs on) cannot be properly synthesized. As a result, some iron-deficient birds become fatigued even when their hemoglobin levels are normal The bloodstream is the body's life support system that nourishes every cell.Thats why i believe in it so much.

youre spot on there niel...my wife has full blown anemia and she has to take iron tablets called ferrous sulphate x 4 per day.....if she does too much she is out of breath and has to rest because of low oxygen in the blood..... Smile

Believe me , i have tested iron several times during training tosses, times are much quicker with iron supplements, than without them.
Of all the tonics, i believe most in Iron, and multivits.

I think honey, and maybe sugar in the drinking water would also help to boost their energy levels.

hi niel have you used electrolytes in the water...... i think you are right, honey is very good too. i bought something called honeygar from a health shop which is cider vinegar and honey mixed which is in liquid form to put in the drinkers.

you certainly know your stuff when it comes to iron niel and about the oxygen and hemoglobin etc...how do you administer it to your birds?

I gave them iron liqiud over the food, about 10 ml , and about 5 gram of multivit powder also, mix it well , you'll never say there are anything on the food, as it get absorbed by the food, only in extreme conditions i will mix with water, othewise i prefer clean water.

niel, i think if given on the food they get it better as in the water half of it seems to be wasted as if you change the water daily you are throwing the vits etc away...like i was saying the other day when i have used the johnsons tonic after a few hours it settles to the bottom of the drinker so its clean water at the top and im not sure the birds have drunk much of it. I think another great tonic is adequate rest before a race. One must be very carefull of burning your racers.
