Then in a human term - again a myth - some thought a good these and hung on to it as nigh every one had heard the tripe so it was a good way out of poor managements.
Another very good reason I packed out the loft was because if an ailment came, it quickly went through any pigeon suspetical  cought it. Sooner fixed, sooner mended... Instead of a constant one going down here and there.
Personally in over 60 years I never heard, let alone new any one who spouted that rubbish!

lol! lol! lol! No Smile Smile Daz is talking sense FW from my experience etc Wink Wink Look at some of the large breeding farms from the past (20,000 plus birds) or the old dove cote of old type situations & over crowding was more the norm on average I would suggest. Also Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Know a man "well" absolute champion here by any bodies standard bounce bounce & he will have 250/280 odd race birds in a 20ft x 7ft loft. Known as the brick man lol! lol! lol! by his friends Wink Wink as that is what he uses on the floor there when looking for a few extra perches as such. Also for all the none believer types Smile Smile not a day goes by where he is not using builders lime on his concrete floor in his loft when cleaning out also, which just so happens to be dug 2 ft into the ground there to be below his fence line where normal folk walk by every day on the other side of his side fence. cheers

Agree about the lime, Knackered, have said for over 50 years that when fanciers stopped using it as a dressing, paint and deep litter of sand and lime the health problems along with going continental began in earnest.

Used it all my time in pigeons.

As for over crowding.

There is a difference between going to capacity and overcrowding, the chicken industry along with others use space to the maximum. but any more would be overcrowding.

Recent programme on chickens, they have to use several anti biotics because of the numbers kept and the inability to give individual attention, they are attempting to cut them down but fear repercussions health wise.

Would never keep more pigeons than I could give individual attention to.

Knackered,

Just going through some records, in this instance the 1999 PIGEON SPORT, there is an article by a Mr. John Pryor, of Adelaide, Australia.

He wrote a very informative account of pigeon racings origin and methods etc;

In his opinion the best fancier in Australia was a certain Mr Peter Mathews of Elimbah

. The methods at that time were mainly celibate, plenty of fresh air and absolutely no overcrowding.
Young birds flying 700 miles in the year of their birth and preferred to older pigeons.

Much more but in the same publication it gives the start of the sport in China, very interesting.

Regards.

Checked the article, it was Peter Matthews writing about John Pryor, not the other way round.

Read the first one, just common sense regarding feeding etc; theories work for some that do not for others.

Second one too involved for me.

Denise do you have equal pairs or are there spare cocks in with the babies? If there's cocks in there without a mate they might be taking their frustrations out on the babies?
Hope you get it sorted.

Good Post F/W … but no lol. No need to say more, except maybe you should consider the mentality of why I state as such, and also the reasoning . .. you will be surprised I believe.
