- another thing is if the lofts to dark and you shut down at say 5pm for 14 hours some birds may still want a drink hence holding corn no water for 14 hours or so
just a thought guess we could go on for ages on this pigeons lol they do test us to lol this is why we feed at least an hour before shutting up graham |

I have never been on darkness so that isnt it for me, I think hot weather and no air change is a problem, I do use fans now when its still and sunny. I never treat for yb sickness, if they are sick more than a week I get rid. not interested in birds that are ill and cannot overcome pigeon problems.

think thats a bit harsh martyn so if you had youngbird sickness in your loft you would kill them all rather than an easy fix

If I had yb sickness in my loft and it affected many birds , lets just say all of them and they were sick for weeks... I would be devistated but would get rid of the lot, and start again its a weekness in my eyes for birds to be sick. They will never be any good after it, I dont mean that birds in my loft dont get a chance to recover, I had a bird once that was fluffed up for a few weeks but not really Ill with green droppings just didnt really know what was wrong but it went out ate and flew ok, it recovered and won big prizes for me, but it got over it and thats the key, I think most birds do get under the weather but they get over it.

is it a weakness for people to be sick too...everyone gets something wrong with them at some point most can be treated but dont think it makes them weaker as their immune systems become stronger to it.

had it go through my young birds in 2001 21 of 24 throwing corn all over the perches put down the worst one and took it to a young austrailian vet she pointed out that there were ulcers on the inside of the crop ! the intake of grain iritated the ulcers causing the birds to vomit she prescribed 2ml of Nystatin oral suspension down the throat and 5m the following 3 days in the water all problems cleared by the 3rd day and ready to race again the following saturday !! nystatin is also used to treat thrush iritations in women ......the youngsters were not on darkness private trained and until that point had not been in contact with any other birds ...ray

I would be interested in finding out how many fanciers have had birds really sick, that need anibiotics, then went on to win good prizes??? I think there might be a point in the imune getting stronger, and we all know that once a bird goes light and has full cocci, they are then imune to it forever, but my point how many of these cured go on to win?

Yes I agree Ian its not normal, however as I said I dont have sick birds cos if I get them I kill them, but for whatever reason I dont know why, you do get the odd day out of a whole yb season that it apperars one morning on the perch, then next day its gone so the bird isnt sick as it doesnt happen again, but it happens and I have no answer why, Im just being honest.
