My thoughts are, if it was true about Finding their way home, with a big help of sound.
I dont think all the Fracking going on in the USA, would help the birds to navigate home.
They say many birds are also lost on crystal clear blue skies in the USA, In the UK i think it is the change in the Jet stream that may be causing so many birds to be lost. Just my thoughts.

One could write a list  Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes with 100 things which could effect the homing ability of our birds Devo 56 Smile Smile etc & still be only guessing I suspect. Fracking for one never had entered my mind, but it could play a part Wink Wink. Being but a simple man lol! lol! lol! & one who can still remember "Just" when 500/600 mile birds were like lemons on a lemon tree type of thing, in the back yard here to what it is today sadly unfortunately & all I know is, we must find a solution to why so many birds just fail to cut the mustard in this day & age now so as to leave something there for the future flyers as such.
There now !!! bounce bounce bounce that's my final bit of tripe, fortunately  for the day from the alien. cheers

If pigeons rely so much on sound, and evolution is to be believed they should have a large ear sticking out from the top of their heads, but they got the smallest ears ever and they are covered by feathers. Our ears are open and I cant hear too much these days, and not covered by anything.
JMO but I think hearing their way home sounds a bit ridiculous but very interesting read or us, and something to think about.

I think the birds navigate by the earth magnetic field we have a noth and south pole.the birds have a sensor maybe in there fore head to allow them to pick up the field. they already no the magnetic field position of there home loft.

Many things I suspect play a part David. sun/stars/local knowledge/smell to name but a few etc. One thing tho that cannot be explained is exactly why for the most part our birds find it so much harder now, to see a season out as such & from my perspective it really is a major problem if one looks into the future. cheers

I would say it would have a lot to do with the atmospherics with the technology about now.
