I've noticed they seem to be hungry all the time, eating a lot more than usual, is this normal for birds during the colder months

You don’t have to worry if birds are eating more in the winter. Naturally birds eat more in winter. Peanuts could be a great food to offer birds in the wintertime. Peanuts have high protein and fat levels and are often an ingredient in suet products. Offering peanuts in a peanut feeder can provide a good source of protein for birds.
