Drinkers on the floor Empty
PostSubject: Drinkers on the floor   Drinkers on the floor EmptyWed Feb 01, 2017 9:01 am

I have made small tables to hold our birds' drinkers. They are big enough to hold a 2 litre drinker with room for the birds to stand on whilst they are drinking, but not too much room.

Over the past week and a bit we have found drinkers on the floor 4 times - not all in the same section, but twice from the same two sections.

I know what is causing it - cocks fighting for the space. They are so intent on 'owning' the drinker table, they fight to try and push the other cock off the table and knock the drinkers on the floor.

I don't like having the drinkers on the floor - bits and dust get in it and I think it is harder for the birds to drink from.

I know that fanciers sometimes put their drinkers on old tables or cable reels - or other structures.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this happening?

Ajustable clip around it etc Phil Smile Smile & clip it to the wall type of thing. Handy man job Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes need not be fancy Laughing Laughing Laughing & I suspect you have the skill level. Right about keeping them off the floor & I've never quite understood why so many flyers do it that way as such. Cheers.

had this before myself phil so we drilled 4 thin screws into the drinker tables around the outline of the drinker base so in effect the drinker sits inside the 4 screws make sure the screws are about 60 mil long ...not had the problem since atb

OK - good advice all round.

Darren - what I have done for now is - made up two lengths of wood about 12 cm long and around 30 mm x 30 mm in section. Screwed them to the table and made a barrier on the two outside side of the drinkers. The other two sides are up against a corner of the loft/section.

If that fails, I will try your method.

Knackered suggestion seems a bit more complicated.

Always had mine on the floor sitting on bricks or wood. About 4 inches high. Use litter. Change when low. Wipe the inside with a paper towel before re filling. Occasionally bleach but not often. Good bacteria. Many ways to do it.

I have mine on milk crates, mainly due to using easibed so it doesn't go into the water....also in the 2 sections I don't use milk crates I stand the drinkers on the plastic nest box grills to leave a gap underneath for air to circulate.

I had 2 milk crates Darren, then I saw some bottle crates at the local paki shop and asked if I could have them...... Razz cheers they are more or less the same.

I remember years ago milk crates were everywhere, we would use them to get a bit of extra height when building a wall with a scaffold board across them, but would get in trouble when the health and safety saw us..... lol!

Put them on a rectangle surface Phil, only just wide enough for the drinker, but with room both sides for a bird to hop up and drink.
I've copied my dad doing this since I was a kid and never had a problem as there's always 1 side free for the bird to hop up.
Regards

Lost that one Laughing Laughing Laughing. Truth be told Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes I hate the type of drinkers under mention here "plastic "*****"   Smile  Smile. Stainless steel drinkers all the way for me here, 2/3 ft off the ground & they drink through bars like in a basket/unit. Cheers.

I think you would be hard pressed to get 'Stainless Steel' drinkers in Europe. In Belg one can get glazed heavy ceramic drinkers but I don't see them used very much except by the top 'rich' men in Holland and Belgium.

Furthermore - I don't think they know what 'milk crates' are in frogland and I can't remember the last time I saw one in the UK. So I think - if you have a milk crate, hand on to it for dear life.

Hi Hal

How are things going your end? Our breeding has gotten off to a very spasmodic start - but I am trusting that things will pick up very soon.

I know you are a big believer in Colloidal Silver. I bought some after reading about it from you on the forum.

I am using just once at the moment. I have also read that it is especially good for pigeons at breeding time.

My question is WHY - is it so good at breeding time and is it really beneficial for our birds at any other time of the year?

Many thanks in advance

Phil

Interesting read Hal Smile Smile didn't always go along with Bilco type of thing Wink Wink but some merit with this topic I would suggest. Only one way to go if going down the C/S path is to buy your own generator & make your own mix etc. No magic bullet Wink Wink Laughing Laughing Laughing but the proof is before you here Laughing Laughing Laughing with my daily tonic as such of 50 mls & the same for my birds in a bucket of water. Clears up one eye colds also when given straight in the eye I've found among other things as such if a bird is feeling poorly. Cheers.

My tonic mix Laughing Laughing Laughing is my little secret David Wink Wink far beyond what you could understand etc Smile Smile Laughing Laughing. For the likes of Phil thou Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes who should have silver rods on hand I suspect & so he is half way there from my point of view, as long as he can cook Wink Wink. Being one of a piker nature Smile Smile I have great pleasure in making something for less than a dollar here for myself & my birds when other people can pay around 35 dollars for the same thing etc. Waffle finished Wink Wink & at the end of the day I class using C/S as stepping back in time as such & using some thing I class as a natural antibiotic to a degree & it is also harmless with benefits, if common sense is used as such. Cheers.
