1/3rd of an ounce morning and ounce evening they always leave a few grains of barley which is always a good gauge ...most on the last flight so still being fed well but down to an ounce and a morning titbit soon once the moult is fully complete ...got a few darkies just starting to tidy up a bit now on their last couple of flights

reason I`m asking is because, as its coming darker on a night now, I`m wondering if they will have time to digest the second feed before it comes dark, would it cause digestion problems like yb sickness type of thing...?

Once a day. All year. Winter time about 3 pm. Racing season change it. How much? If they leave a little I just cut them back. Protein percentage down to 12%. Lights go no for stock birds 3rd week November. Protein goes up gradually. 14%. Just before hatching will up it again. Straw covered floors.

David. Breeding yes, once a day. They always have plenty. What they do not eat gets fed to the non-breeders. With other mixture. The breeders know what is good for the youngsters. Race birds once a day. Morning. After a training toss. Any uneaten feed is taken away at noon. Same thing if racing the next day. Young birds same. But will keep them little on the hungry side to facilitate trapping. Trapping mix for young is usually few peanuts some small seed some safflower. Hemp is legal here next July so will grow a few plants. Heck can sell the leaves anyway! Most of the federation here have different ways of feeding. But it really does not matter as 99% fly widowhood or roundabout. So feed is not a motivator. I would assume so anyway. There are many different combinations of feed grains on the market. High in carbs, proteins, fat and fiber. No one feeds beans here to my knowledge but in other parts of the world they do. With some success. "Old Hand" swore that beans were the only food to give them. But commonsense dictates that pigeons are basically grain eaters and variety can only be beneficial. However, when preparing for a race, the pigeon does not know how far it is going to fly. Hence the various mixes. Make them eat the long distance mix to ensure success. Or high protein for short fast races. Speed mix. Think over the years have tried them all, in all combinations. Never has it made a significant difference. So now just a basic mix. Lots of different grains. Cheap. If lacking protein, ie breeders just add Safflower or whatever. Pigeons fill their crop, that is usually enough for 24 hours. Feeding young is different of course. Just my opinion only, assume many will disagree. o be it, each to their own. If it aint broke do not try to fix it.
