| had my ybs out yesterday, I`m now leaving them out a few hours to please them selves.....but when It came to calling them in, I noticed one was missing, I thought it will be back later. anyway a bit later on I had to go out, so went out into the street and saw a pigeon on the path, went over to it and it was mine that was missing, there was no sign of injury, no blood or damage, just laid dead on the pavement. the bird was under telephone wires, but there was no damage to it at all any thoughts anyone ? |

| Yeah the poor things have to run the gauntlet of danger every time they go out, if it’s not one thing it’s another. |

| Could have been hit by a vehicle David which could leave no visual signs, just hit by the side and knocked onto the path.
Over the years every fancier will lose some of their pigeons for many different reasons many will never know how or why.
I am afraid it is part and parcel of the sport.
Regards. |

| Knackered, I think the area where David lost his pigeon will not allow excessive speeds, I have seen road kills that are almost unrecognisable and others with no visual signs of injury, if the pigeon just caught the side of a vehicle it could have killed it but only bruising that is not obvious would be the case.
The thing is it was very bad luck and not a very pleasant way to lose a potential winner.

| You could be on the right track David, the weather is affecting humans who have control of many things, the pigeons have not, the rascing pigeon depends on the fancier concerned.
Dehydrtation can be a problem at any time but in this weather????.

the others were calm though, so whatever it was didn't seem to bother them... |

| ive quite a lot of wood pigeons around me denise, also crows and magpies, but they have never bothered my pigeons in any way.....even the squirrels go about their business and don't interfere with the pigeons....the pigeons don't give them a second glance, probably because they are used to seeing them every day .. |

| You have some very lazy wood pigeons denise, ours are round the bird table waiting to feed on the feed put out for the small birds and adept at clinging onto the small feeders and getting the food from the small feeders, at day break.
There is no point in attempting to stop them as if you frighten them away you also frighten the small birds. At this time the wood pigeons will still be breeding and after food at day break.
My wife puts wheat out every day for the wood pigeons but they still go for the small seed first.
Never had a problem with wood pigeons when racing nor with the doves the latter sometimes went into the loft.
There appears no hard and fast rules in nature regarding the habits of animals, denise, and that is what makes matters more interesting.

| we give the woodies a bit of barley each day for a treat I love seeing the young woodies just after they have left the nest so we give them a food source of a cheap barley all year round ,they used to roost in the elderberry tree in the corner of the garden but council took it down its replenishing itself nicely now though |

| denise, you will find there is only one thing stranger than folk and that is a pigeon, that is what makes them so loveable and entertaining, If you do not intend racing and just having them as friends and pets you can very easily make them tame by using food as a means, peanuts being the best, but just as a come on and not as a basic feed.
You do not have to starve them , even with a fully belly they will come to you for a pea nut if you get them used to a means of letting them know you have them to hand.
If you are just having them as pets then you can use a basic cheap mixture as their main feed.
You could also make a cat proof entry for any that are late commers, it would stand the weight of a pigeon but not anything heavier.
But just think how dull it would be if everything went as we wanted.
Good Luck.
Regards.
