| More of this starting to be used in various continental mixes. I just thought it was hype so they can charge an extra £1 a bag. Anyway I just tried a breeding mix with it in because the usual stuff was out of stock, bearing in mind these have never seen it before, the first thing they are going for is the black maize!! There's only a small proportion of black corn in the mix but it stands out and the pigeons are straight on it. No racists in my team |

Could be the black stuff isn't as extensively farmed David, making it more expensive. My guess anyway. |

| Had no ides there was more maize grown than wheat or barley.
Always been used in pigeon feed from the Dog Tooth of my youth to the Horse Beans and peas etc;
Pigeons flew from Rome when all the present polished grains were unheard of.
Never heard of Black Maize before mentioned on site.
Think next thing ACORNS will be the in thing.
Look what those little charmers produce.
Regards. |

| "Green acorns are known to contain high concentrations of pyrogallol. Here, we describe an extended case report of two pigeons found dead with a filled muscular stomach of acorns. The following pathologic findings were observed: irritation of mucosal membranes in the gastrointestinal tract, blackish discolored chyme, hyperemic organs, and general edemas. The muscular stomach (ventriculus) was filled with pieces of acorns, and the abdominal cavity contained bloody aqueous fluid. In order to uncover the cause of death, we determined pyrogallol in liver and kidney of one dead pigeon and in ventriculus contents of both pigeons by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A further aim of our study was to compare pathologic findings and pyrogallol concentrations in kidney, liver, and ventriculus of poisoned pigeons with those of healthy pigeons. The pyrogallol concentrations in samples of dead pigeons were 16-1200-fold higher than in control animals fed grass and maize-corn. Altogether, the acorn-filled ventriculus, the pathologic findings, the well nourished state, and the high pyrogallol concentrations in the dead pigeons suggest an acute pyrogallol poisoning by acorn. With respect to controls, we conclude that pyrogallol concentrations of 6 ng/g of kidney, 8 ng/g of liver, and 2 ng/g of gastric content do not affect the health of pigeons. |

| My dad used to send us out with buckets to collect acorns, only brown ones that were on the floor, when we got home we had to but our school shoes on and jump up and down on them, after a couple of days when the birds had eaten all the smaller pieces we had to jump on them again, we also had to go to the woods and collect all the ferns for nesting materials. |

as with anything a little knowledge in a specific can be dangerous hal eh ...best left alone and besides why use acorns when other stuff is available beggars belief for me when we have alternatives that are completely safe in any quantity atb |

| I'll see how they go on it, it's now mixed in with the odd bits of this and that left over from winter feeding, but first time for me feeding what I think of as a light breeding mix. More used to the breed and wean type mixes with added maples. Birds are handling perfect on it though, fed twice a day as much as they want then troughs taken out. |

| i read an article a few years ago about what grains the birds pick out when breeding ,they like the fats apparently but of course protein is required some pairs eat differently and dont like the small stuff or even go for different grains at different times ,a balanced mix is best eh alot wont use maize while ybs in the nest but they always eat it eh atb |
