| Hi All thought you might be interested, i got this from my friend George who lives in the northeast, i have his permission to put it on here
Breeding Systems Cross-breeding, line-breeding, in-breeding? Which to use, that is the question. At one end of the spectrum of difficulty is cross-breeding, the easiest system, and at the other end is in-breeding, the most difficult.
Cross-breeding: the mating of birds with no relationship within the previous five generations. That is what the experts say, but we could say unrelated birds. This is the simplest system and the one used by a lot of fanciers. You avoid some of the hazards of in-breeding.
Line-breeding: somewhat the same as in-breeding but it takes longer to establish purity. For most fanciers it is less risky and less-expensive. It could involve the following matings: grandfather to granddaughter; grandmother to grandson; cousin to cousin.
In-breeding: a system used to concentrate desirable genes in a family. This system uses matings as follows: father to daughter, mother to son, brother to sister. Never start in-breeding with anything but the very best stock. Do not expect to take mediocre birds and improve their quality by using this system. In-breeding quickly shows up all the good qualities, by allowing the best association of genes, but it also shows up the faults.

hi ken, interesting reading......re cross-breeding, is this introducing a pigeon of a completely different breed ? if it is then how would you personally choose a suitable cross into your family.....purley by performance or by suitabiliy of type ? for example if the eyes compliment each other, shape and build of the bird, temprament of the birds to be crossed....? thanks.

yes david cross breeding is when you bring a differant family in to cross into ur own, i look for birds which are same type as my own, but must have proven record, If you know which fancier has the type you want watch is results ovr a season find out how many they send, i tend to look at small team fliers. who are there or there about week in weekout, do ur home work, Ken

But mother and son then the young would have to be put to stock were the blood can be used to improve the rest of the family

hi ken, so wouldnt you go for a fancier who sends loads of birds to a race and wins it ? also when you say small team do you mean ybs or obs ? i read that if a fancier has a perticularly good cock and he wants to re-create it you first pair him to his daughter, and then pair him to the daughter of that pairing........

David if you look at a big team flier, its harder to judge, here you would have to see if its the same pigeons comming week in week out or a different one each week, which is harder todo unless you knew the ring numbers, you can pair sire to grandaughter if you want to all ur doing with in breeding is getting as nearto the base pigeon as you can Ken

If you do that David then the pigeon would be best used in the stock as the gene pool would be to good to lose
