First training toss

OK you guys - you take your young birds to 10 or 12 miles, for their time training by car.

My question is:-   How long would you expect that 'First' training toss to take?  And what sort of time is Too Long?

Phil if my first toss takes 35/40 minutes I don't stress out all that much etc here, as I normally pick a head wind day to add the enjoyment factor & suspence . 45 minutes plus & I tend to be pacing up & down in the back yard type of thing for the non enjoyment factor. 3/4 tosses thou & I expect them to be up to what I call racing speed as such & that means beating me home by the time I drive in my drive etc.

Yep! Mine are back on the road today as well.

At 08:00 hrs - I took them back to the 12 miles place. They took 48 minutes the first time - and Today it took them only 26 minutes.

Also - from the moment I saw them overhead, they tool 1 minute 9 seconds for them all to land and go in. YES! - get in!

After all the problems I had a couple of weeks ago, when I could not get the little buggers to come in at all - to this - Happy Days!

I am trusting everyone has as good training tosses themselves.

Great news Phil, they've got the message now

good to hear phil mine just been out for a fly going to basket in half hour once they had a drink ...quite windy but clearing up nicely

Question - What is the thinking behind letting them have a fly, then taking them training?

I think its so they come straight home phil....

If I give them a short toss I'll give them a fly in the morning, if not, they come home and fly around the loft before coming in, not what I want on race day

if its a short toss I want them home and in not exercising around the loft

I give mine as many small ones as possible. It's gives them confidence ect ect..I think some take ybs too far for their first tosses then they wonder why they lose them..

How many short tosses is 'As much as possible'? And what sort of mileage are we talking about Ray?

we had another sticky toss today but we faired well come the end the ybs would have learnt a lot in these last 2 tosses with most homing alone

You will not lose them now darren .sometimes when this happens they make your best birds


Money only go 2 to 3 miles phil just so they get used to it.tomorrow weather permitting they will go 15

I have yet another question - I can really see the sense in getting the birds to fly for a while BEFORE you take them for a short toss.

My questions is:- How do you get your young birds to trap without giving them anything to eat? Or do you just give them a tiny bit of small stuff, just to get them in?

exactly get some conditioner for trapping ...don't feed at all give the birds their exercise then trap with seed or conditioner and let them get a drink then off for a trainer about 30 mins later

we had a good toss today last 2 have been iffy but a day off from ybs returning all day out the basket half a turn and gone , all home

3 bloody ybs missing ..here we go lol..only went 15 miles as well..A yb I bought in as well I must have put the kiss of death on him cause he was one of the best looking ybs in my loft and I fancied him to win haha...

Hard time weather wise getting mine trained more. Over 40 C this week and very high humidity. So to compensate let them out at sun up. Cooler. 2 hours they are up usually. July 30 first race. May miss it send them week after 150 mils.

It has plenty of time to return Ray. And when it does, it will have learnt plenty.

One of mine is missing this morning from this mornings exercise. It is the oldest one with the most experience.

Funny thing these pigeons! lol.

I'm 3 down from a 20 miler this morning as well Ray, didn't see that coming as they've been training well recently, I'm hopeful for at least 2 of them as they've had nights out before, but still plenty of daylight left so you never know they may come today.

I read a fancier took 47 ybs yesterday and had none by nightfall, hes only two back this morning last I heard........
