I havnt raced for the past couple of years, but when I did I trained them as much as I could before the first race, then cut training down to once or twice a week once racing had started...

Differant strokes for differant folks etc Steve Smile Smile but here you would be on a hiding to nothing if you didn't train them as such. The art is deciding when & how far you go with your young birds when training from my perspective. We have two camps here Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes the flog them to death types Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad "Chook farmer's" & those that know that after a certain amount of tosses if they haven't twigged what the game is all about as such, your just wasting your time effort & money doing what your doing. This week Wink Wink I've had a 30 miler head wind down south & a 20 miler head wind up north & come Saturday here bounce bounce it will tell if my effort Smile Smile was worth the effort type of thing Wink Wink. cheers

at what point do we think ybs are ready to train, when they have been ranging for a certain period, or if they stop exercising freely or are pairing up, therefore reluctant to exercise...?

ours need to break from the bunch and very early to have any chance at the club...we cover a large area so i like to keep the birds tuned in with 1 toss a week from 12 or 22 miles if you fly in a corridor either first drop or last maybe its not necessary to train our club covers 15 miles to the west up to the severn and 20 miles east into Wiltshire also 30 miles north and south of me so we like a refresher to keep them on the ball

I keep mine going all the season 4 days a week Monday to Thursday at 27 miles weather permitting train hard and feed heavy but be Fair to them and if they look like they need a rest they get it if their is one thing I have learned about young birds is that they need plenty of work and they will be your best
