| Very interesting. Worked with thousands of hogs over the years with their health problems/viruses etc,. However, comes to pigeons, in my situation any way, I rely on natural immunity. Basically open loft. Usually have a young wild one enter the lofts. Pic is of the wild flock here. |

| You cannot beat nature Hal, natural immunity will only come about by treating the pigeons NATURALLY, open loft etc; and coming into contact with and overcoming problems naturally, not stuffing anything the commercial boys suggest, the pigeons health has been ruined by thoughtless money grabbing morons.

| trouble is down at most clubs the birds are mixing in baskets with various ailments ok old birds should be able to cope but ybs need time to build that immunity, tbh ...if you just sent week after week on just water and corn I think you would miss a lot of racing ...we don't medicate with antibiotics but do treat for canker and worms as we use deep litter in the basket and most weeks the same litter is in those baskets from another club the previous week and if you look closely theres spewed corn and god knows what else in it ...that's why we worm mid season its not ideal but better than birds going down because of worm infestation ,I don't think its as simple as go open loft ok hal seems to do ok with it but he does not race week in week out jmo and what seems to work here ,don't like medicating but required in my opinion for yb racing ,I know some who medicate every week whether it be with virkons, milton etc...its still medicating ,we use avidress and ropa and a probiotic on race return and canker every 3 races and worm once during the race season with moxidectin ,off season you can build that immunity and as old birds they seem to do well ,I can honestly say I have had no serious problems ever with them as old birds after this treatment as ybs |

| For as many years as I can remember I had NO health problems either young or old birds as friends would confirm.
It is not only open loft, which helps, because pigeons from birth allowed to pick and choose everything in the garden and do their own thing become gradually naturally immune to many things that would if sprung upon them be a cause for concern.
It is certainly not only open loft, my pigeons had a balanced diet EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, no up and down just good sound feed, every day.
Deep litter of sand and dried droppings also helped along with lime.
Garlic in the water every day, the pigeons had access to the pond water but I had to fill the garlic drinkers every day, the young were fed with garlic water and it became their natural drink.
I never wormed nor treated for anything, the only thing I did was give a Old Hand White tablet when the odd pigeon went light.
They were vaccinated as per rules, a friend and I taking it in turns to pay.
Never scraped out very often and left the pigeons to enjoy their life.
I had a cupboard full of unopened aids to win etc; given by a shop keeper friend who gave up his business along with the odd one bought on a friends recommendation but never used.
Over the years I achieved all I set out to do. win from every race point with both young and old from both South and North which I did and many times over in most cases. ( In the races flown in the clubs).
Won more shows than I can relate.
So irrespective of any other considerations pigeons can win and be illness free without any commercial products and no treatments whatsoever.
You cannot do this overnight with pigeons that have been treated over and over again with rubbish it would take years to have the healthy pigeons of 60-70 years ago.
Regards.

| yes I agree misty the constitution of birds years ago was much stronger or more sound I think all the foreign imports of drugged and propped up pigeons with meds have left the current crop of pigeons generally dependent on medications which is a downward spiral and will only get worse ...myself I try to treat as least as possible and never once racing has ceased and am not one for treating prior to pairing either atb |

Best of luck and irrespective of any other consideration I am more than looking forward to your two in the one loft no matter what.

Hit the nail on the head etc O/S with your first part of your sentence etc I suggest Still we are fortunate here as they say, having a local Vet on the scene as such, who fortunately will give you a health regime of goodies for the season at around 2000 dollars . |

| Yep natural health is best, and it is definitely possibly to breed birds mostly resistant to canker |
