they came from phillipe martin rp scribe and were plodders, to be honest I have gone for a allround family now the old grooters bred a few tidy birds though they are still here but the others were gifted to a member on here but he let them out and hence they never returned ...my grandfather raced the grooters in the 70's so I kept the best pair for nostalgia theirs a few in the race team from them that came well as ybs see how they go as yearlings another member still has his I think that raced the unc yb programme this season to and came well so see how they go next yr atb

I imported 12 Hammond and Whittaker Grooters 20 years ago. Bred off them and eventually got rid of the lot after 3 years. They were dummies! Nice colours. Dordins do not do good here, or Aardens. 100 to 700 miles? My Jannsen crosses do it. Old De Smet did also. Plus Sions and a few others.

In my opinion, strain names mean nothing. Their are horses for courses. Families. All famous 'strains' came from crosses from one family to another. I doubt if any strain today is 10% pure, if that. But to sell birds the more advertising the strains get the better the sales. Try what you have to the distance. If they cannot do it get other birds from people who have flown the distance successfully. Here is something. Guy from my home town, West Hartlepool, moved to Canada many years ago. He died few years ago. His name was Bill Butterfield. He flew very well here. Especially at the distance races. He re-counted a story from when he was in the UK. His father flew so good he got a visit from Billy Bishop I believe. some famous Eye sign guy anyway. After handling the birds and much looking at the eyes, the eye-sign guy said "With eyes like these, no wonder you win a lot!" Like Bill told me, he just shut up and left when Bill's father said "I cannot see the eyes. I am blind!" Which he was.

We used to race the old Westcott birds years ago which did well for us..up till now never found a pigeon for us to do 580 miles and win..we have brought a few in the last 2 years to see if they are capable of doing it..its a long process with distance birds unlike sprint, but we are looking forward to getting back into distance races again. Over the years we have expected our birds to do 400 anyway so hopefully our new ones will do 500 plus

I asked Tmak from were I got the birds parents or rather grandparents from, about them. He said he does not have any at all. These are basically Jansen. They do perform well. Throwback to Gits? Do not know. But different.

I know some of the old bricoux and sion had feather legs to but then these old fanciers were forever exchanging birds as a lot of top fanciers do today and as you say it makes a mockery of strain names but that's all we got to go on the pigeons at your lofts are as much a family as anyone elses "van den hals"

Still remember Bishops loft as such, 100ft long & black & white vinyl tiles on the floor there from one end to the other. ***** |
