no m8, not taking the piss, this gets done with the old canarys, trim there vent feathers, helps with the mating. |

| this is just my opinion about distance birds, the old distance birds where plodders, they just went a steady pace but they came home in all weathers in most cases where todays birds may do it at faster pace,do they go on to do it year in and year out like the old breeds.i think that these modern birds get burnt out as faciers even send them as yearlings as well,i waited about 3 year before i send mine to the furthest race and he won,but i only had the one.anyway just my opinion like i said |

| i have a number of breeds , jan Aarden , van der wegan i also have a sprinkling of the shouman (spelling) the american 1,000 mile family they are lovely dark velvets birds and hard as nails but ive crosed them in to the Aardens and wegans now so the next few years i will see by sending them to NFC longer races . |

| of course the birds are faster ian but how many long distance races can these birds do,you know yourself when these new breed of birds come across a hard day how many get though.even if they do they are not the same.ask any fancier who has had the old breeds and they will tell you a different story, they may do the long races about 3 ,4 or even more times |

i was lucky as it was all down to my uncle and his partner building up the srain of long distance birds throu stormqueen etc yes its very hard racing that kind of distance ray havent had the chance yet but only going in to my 4rth year it all takes time but at least i know my distance birds are all down throu stormqueen that has done it second open from france is some task and shed flown 100 miles more than the only bird to beat her in the open result |

| I thought I would reply to this thread as I have just discovered that I have a few old breeding pairs of Pros Roosens and Pol Bostyns that I have kind of inherited from my friend here in the Algarve.
I have had good success in all the races over 500 miles and the only 2 over 600 miles that I have been able to enter with some of these birds, the same birds have scored at 250 miles too.
I found an old ledger book a few days ago and I have managed to trace certain birds breeding records right back to 1985 and every one of the top performers is either a Bostyn or a Pros Roosens bird, one is a cross.
What makes this even better is the breed has been kept pure as 2 other fanciers in Portugal also had these birds brought here the Pros Roosens in "85" and Bostyns long before that and every couple of years they used to exchange a few birds to keep the breed from becoming too inbred.
I have been the only one to time in from Dax and Barcelona in my immediate area these last 2 years with these birds and we fly the furthest in our Federation abd in fact the whole country and I am now going to focus my efforts into breeding more of these great birds in greater numbers to preserve the breeds and future Distance racing.

There is a good sale on the BICC website, i will have a go for a couple but like with most sales go to the loft and get them for about a 5th of the price. i remember picking from the nest at Porter & Richardson's direct from GTXI, i paid very little for mine, the one i didnt pick sold for nearly a grand at Blackpool at auction! Don - Never dealt at all with Matt Rakes but his pigeons and performances are exceptional |
