| The think I dont like is, they’re not allowed to use wood-shavings in the crates any more because some lib sites don’t like the mess, so all our birds get in the crate is a roll of corrugated cardboard, which doesn't dry out the droppings quick enough so there’s two problems with that. 1/ when there’s a two or more days in the crate the droppings build up and starts sticking to their feet, especially if the atmosphere is damp or humid. I’ve had them come home and land on the board unable to walk before because their toes were stuck together like balls, I thought the birds were injured or hawked, I couldn’t believe it when I saw what happened. 2/ Most keep our birds nice at home and would dream of feeding our birds on top of wet droppings, yet we send them to the races, and they feed them in the crates by pouring food over the top of them, so it sticks to all the droppings, so your birds will pick up any illness from any other lofts that arnt kept as well as yours. Surely it’s going backwards, and the birds should be the number one priority. They won’t use sand because it will grind up the release mechanism in the metal crates. Good luck all This weekend |

| Not a very enviable position for any pigeon for the reasons mentioned Boosey on top of which it will affect the fittest pigeons the most.
The pigeons kept in clinical conditions at home will not cope as well as others.
Only need a couple with loose droppings and off colour.
Once new a fancier who only ever scored on a long hold over, the only time they received decent food.
Hope you have a good one Boosey, cannot think the Old Bird season nearly over.
Regards. |

| i agree with what your saying there boosey, ive not race so i dont know what our club are doing re bedding ........but i agree about feeding them by just pouring the corn onto wet droppings, my loft isnt cleaned out twice a day like some, but i always make sure the water is changed daily, and the corn is kept clean and fresh daily.......i feed in trays with wire tops so the birds cannot walk on the corn, which is a recipe for disaster if you ask me, i know they do need to build a natural immunity to a certain degree but not to the point where its creating illness .
with so many birds from different lofts its dangerous enough anyway, some fanciers arnt bothered if their birds are sick and send them regardless, little wonder our birds pick things up in the race pannier. |
