| Other than silly early mistakes we all make at some time I would never change the system I later adopted, Nature, Nature, Nature.
Never raced very young pigeons but know they are capable of flying long distances.
When the loft was broken into two very young pigeons that I would never have given a thought to racing ended up in Scotland.
Obviously panic stricken probably gave them the extra energy.
But it proved that young pigeons are capable of flying at a very young age.
Regards. |

| Sometimes ybs fly forever until they drop..I had a yb do that many a time going over the top , flying hundreds of miles . Most don't survive in my case as exhausted |

| Think you are right.
When I was young there used to be flyaways, young birds going high up and not being seen or heard of again.
Happened to me when in partnership with Philip Yorke, he was far older than me, I put my pigeons into the partnership and Philip bought 12 young birds from Huddlestones a stud of the time.
We were on different shifts down the mine.
I fed the young ones in the morning on a sunny day and let them out, up and up they went in a wide circle, higher and higher.
The only two that returned were two that I had bred at home.
None were heard of again.
Where, how and why they ended up doing that ???????.
Never had a similar problem since ( one is enough).

| Its makes you wonder where they go as the thousands that get lost on race days . I had one bad fly away a few years ago when my ybs got lost , I had a couple of phone calls from the same place , Hexham which isn't far at all from us , but once lost I think its hard for them to find home |

| Yes I have often thought along the same lines as you, where on earth do the millions of pigeons lost every few years end up ?.
I know some end up as townies and wildies but not to the extent to explain the numbers involved, and even raptors cannot acount for the numbers involved.
Over the years the numbers must be astranomical.

Especially now as 20.000 members are sending far more than the 150.000 ever did in the 50' / 60's.
Breeding to lose. A wing and a prayer one or two will turn out a 'Good Un'! |

| Yes a lot of birds raced and a lot lost. We do get the odd one back when the farmers disturb them but they should just stay there as no good to me |
