You would only know what happened to yours George, the idea is to find out why so many pigeons get lost and the only way is to track every pigeon in a race. You would need a couple of races with 2,000 pigeons involved. You would know the route each took, where they all ended up etc; After all the years the sport has been in existence not one real attempt has been made to find out the reason for the losses. Good bad and indifferent pigeons get lost there is no set pattern. The technology is available find out. Regards |

Think one of the possible causes of losses may be the transporters. As I have said many times the only time the condition of the pigeons count is on liberation, the very best conditioned pigeon can be adversely affected by transporter conditions. The changing conditions within the transporter could easily be tracked, the top crates could have very different temperature etc; to the rest and those between. But the why worry it would upset the commercial boys if a solution was found. Regards. |

Know when i was a kid George there were the odd race that went wrong, today it is in reverse, you have the odd reasonable one. Pathetic returns there George. Do not think those running the show are to blame entirely, think if you just let them fly round the loft and basic feed you would get as many returns. Something sadly wrong. Regards. |

Would under a normal race expect at least three quarters of them back in reasonable time in a ordinary club race, when all flying back to the same loft and been trained together there is something sadly amiss with that result. Do not blame the loft manager, there is something amiss that we are missing. Regards. ................................... |

| The problem is Knackered no one appears worried, they just go on as if nothing has happened year on year and it just gets worse.
Diabolical results even so early in the season when pigeons should take the early races in their stride.
This year is apparently worse than ever in many instances.
The video David put on another post shows what happens in some cases.
They progressively break up into small groups, not able to keep up and even take different routes.
So either the pigeons are adversely affected whilst in the transporters or are not fit for purpose.
Tis of course possible that all the junk some fanciers put down their throats both curative and supposedly performance enhancing has ruined the overall health of the present pigeons, not to mention the even worse preventatives.
i think the present day pigeons are only a shadow of those gone by and the commercial boys are to blame.
Regards..

Be interesting to see how things go George. Some fanciers travel a long way to enter. Just hope they get rewarded. OH FOR THE OLD DAYS. Regards. |

| Considering the possible contributery factors relative to the almost demise of our sport and possible causes of losses etc; Changes whilst I have been involved. Polished corn etc; possibly more harm than good for several reasons, as well as getting rid of the possible odd bad corn which most birds are well capable of dealing with and reinforcing their ability to do so as nature provides they gip at the first hint of anything untoward. Preventative medication, never heard of it for many years. Increase in both the odd old diseases like canker and one eyed cold we now have enough to fill a book and all the medication necessary to deal with them. Widowhood, the odd case when I was young but not one fancier I know used it until many years later. You cannot buck nature and get away with it, the more fanciers turned to widowhood the more problems started. The Darkness System, a blight on our sport, to me totally unacceptable, you cannot buck nature and get away with it. Transporters, no real investigations have been made to find out the condition of pigeons going on the transporters and at liberation, tis only the latter that counts in a race. But one of the most important detrimental events started when pigeons were based on what they cost and were treated to any extent to keep them alive to sell off springs. Far more fun when there were no studs as such. Just very glad enjoyed it when it was mainly a working mans sport and not when turned as it has been as evidenced today.
